BAILEY,
J. J., lives twenty-five miles from Sacramento, and five from Cosumnes, his
Post Office; was born in Ohio in 1828, and lived there until 1840; in that
year he removed to Wisconsin, and remained there until 1850. He then came to
California, and settled in Nevada County; he moved to this county in 1855;
owns six hundred and forty acres of land, worth, with improvements, about
$8,000. Mr. Bailey was married in 1879 to Mrs. L. D. Benton, a native of
Missouri; she has two children, son and daughter, by a former husband.

came to California in that year, and settled in this county, where he is now

BELCHER, J. C., lives seventeen miles from Sacramento and ten miles from Elk
Grove; his Post Office is Cosumnes. He was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in
1820. After leaving school he was in a hardware store two years, and in 1841
went to Canada and taught music. In 1845 he went to Illinois and spent ten
years in that State teaching music, and then went to Missouri. Here he farmed
until 1861, when he came to California and engaged n the same business, making
fruit a specialty. For fifteen successive years he sold his fruit in Virginia
City, Nevada. In 1861 he bought his homestead of four hundred acres on the
Cosumnes River, three miles below Cosumnes. It then had no improvements except
fourteen acres of fruit trees, which he increased to thirty acres. In 1876 he
purchased twelve hundred acres of the Daylor ranch, making his farm sixteen
hundred acres, valued at $40,000. The Cosumnes Post Office is located on this
farm. Mr. Belcher died at his residence, February 7, 1878. A view of this

CAMPBELL, J.; Post Office, Walsh Station; lives eight miles from Elk Grove and
eleven miles from Sacramento; was born in Bradford County, New York, in 1824,
and lived there until 1860; he came to California in that year across the
plains with an ox team and settled in this county, where he has since resided;
owns four hundred and twenty-five acres of land, worth, with improvements,
about $7,000. Mr. Campbell was married in 1849 to Miss Polly Tice, a native of
New York State; they have three children two boys and a girl.

CONNER, GEORGE D., lives twenty-four miles from Sacramento and four miles
south of Cosumnes---his Post Office; was born in Kentucky in 1827, and lived
there until 1845, when he moved to Missouri, and was engaged in clerking in a
dry goods store until 1849. He came to California in that year, across the
plains, but returned to Missouri in 1851; he drove cattle across the plains in
1852 to this State; was in the big fire in Sacramento in that year, and saved
the lives of two persons. In 1853, he returned East again, to Kentucky, and
engaged with his father-in-law in iron-works. He there suffered heavy loss by
fire; returned to this State for the third time in 1859, and settled in this
county. Mr. C. may truly say he has passed through fire and flood, as it was
here that he experienced the discomforts of the latter. He owns 3000 acres of
land, worth about $25,000. Was married in 1853 to Sarah J. Welsh, a native of
Tennessee, who has borne him eight children, all of whom are living---five
sons and three daughters.

CARTWRIGHT, P. S.; Post Office, Cosumnes; lives
twenty miles from Sacramento; was born in New York in 1839, and lived there
until 1861, engaged in farming; he came to California in that year, and
continued in the business of farming. He was married in 1877 to Miss M.
Eldred, also a native of New York.

DENHAM, ROBERT; Post Office, Walsh Station; lives fifteen miles southeast of
Sacramento; was born in Pebsbury, Somersetshire, England, in 1844; emigrated
to the United States in 1857, and lived in Illinois until 1863; he came to
California in that year, and settled in this county; was engaged in teaming
until 1867; he then returned to Illinois, and was in the business of
stock-raising until 1875. Mr. Denham was married in 1867 to Miss M. J.
Addison, who was born in Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1846; she
emigrated to the New England States with her parents when only six years of
age. They have four children one son and three daughters. He owns three
hundred and twenty acres, worth about $4000.

DIXON, WILLIAM H.; Post Office, Cosumnes; lives twenty miles from Sacramento;
was born in Durham County, England, in 1833; he removed to Canada West in
1855, and worked in locomotive shops until 1858; he came to California
November eighteenth of that year, and direct to this county; he returned to
England in 1866, but came back to this State in 1867, and bought the ranch he
now owns in 1868. Mr. Dixon worked at blacksmithing from 1858 to 1868; since
then he has been engaged in farming and stock-raising: he owns three thousand
two hundred acres of land, worth, with improvements, about $60,000. He has
held the office of School Trustee Clerk. Was married in 1877 to Miss Clara J.
Hill, a native of Ohio.

FAHRENBAKER, ANDREW; Post Office, Walsh Station;
lives fourteen miles from Sacramento, on the Jackson road ; was born in
Germany in 1822, and lived there until 1851, engaged in carpet weaving: was in
the Prussian war of 1848; emigrated to the United States in 1851, and lived
three months in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania ; built a Catholic church in that
city; while in course of construction he fell from it and broke his shoulder.
From Pittsburg he went to Cincinnati and remained there two years, then to
Dayton, Ohio, and then to California in 1856. Came to Sacramento and worked
six months; took sick, and his wife did washing. Then moved to the country,
paying $900 annual rent for dairy ranch, milking fifty cows. Took up a tract
of three hundred and twenty acres of land on Stockton road, and lived on it
till 1860, when he moved to his present home, and has followed farming since.
Married Theresa Arnew in 1853. They have three boys living, one dead, and two
girls living.

FRALEY, JAMES M.; Post Office, Walsh Station; lives at the “Twelve Mile
House,” twelve miles from Sacramento; was born in Maryland in 1827, and lived
there until 1852; in that year he removed to Illinois, and remained until
1853; he then came to California across the plains, and to this county; he
followed teaming for about nine years; since then he has been engaged in
farming. He rents three hundred and twenty acres of land from Louis Railer.

FRY,
M. A.; Post Office, Walsh Station; lives thirteen miles from Sacramento, on
the Jackson road; was born in Pennsylvania in 1830; removed with his parents
in 1837 to Virginia, and remained there till 1843, when he went to Iowa, but
returned to Virginia the next year, and lived there until 1846; he then
returned to Iowa, and resided there until 1859; he came to California in that
year, and settled in Placer County; while there he was engaged in mining,
teaming, hotel keeping, and the mill business; he came to this county in 1868,
and has since been farming; owns one hundred and sixty acres of land, worth
about $2500. Mr. Fry was elected Justice of the Peace in 1875, and served two
years. He was married in 1852 to Miss H. Barnum, a native of New York; they
have five children living, three sons and two daughters.

GRIMSHAW, WM. R., was born in 1826, in a house opposite the present Academy of
Music, New York City. He has made two trips and return to England; first in
1829, returning 1831; second, 1832, returned 1837. In 1837 he went to Mobile,
Alabama, where he remained till 1841; thence to New York, to Charleston, S.
C., to “Interior,” to New York City again, to Burlington, Vt., and, for the
third time, to New York City. In 1847-48 he went before the mast, on the ship
“Isaac Walton,” bound for California. Arrived in Monterey Bay, he shipped on
the “Anita,” a naval tender. He left the “Anita” in October, 1848, to keep
books for S. Brannan & Co. at Sutter's Fort, at a salary of $400 per month. In
November, 1849, he formed partnership with Wm. Daylor, and kept a store at
Daylor's Ranch, on Cosumnes River, where he has since resided. Mr. Grimshaw
married Mrs. Sarah P. Daylor. They have seven children, viz. : Wm. R., Jr.,
Thos. Winturn, Emma (wife of W. D. Lawton, of San Francisco), George, Jno.
Francis, Frederick, Walter. The sons all reside on the old Daylor Ranch.

GRIMSHAW, MRS. S. P., lives eighteen miles from Sacramento, and three-quarters
of a mile from Cosumnes, her Post Office; was born in Edgar County, Illinois,
in 1830; in 1837 she removed to Missouri, and lived there until 1846; she came
to California in that year and to this county. She was married March 4, 1847,
to William Daylor, a native of London, England. Mr. Daylor took up, in company
with Mr. Sheldon, the tract of land known as the Sheldon Grant; it consisted
of five leagues. Her husband died in October, 1850; she was married again in
1851 to W. R. Grimshaw. She was in Sacramento City during the flood of 1852.
Mrs. Grimshaw owns one hundred and ten acres, worth, with improvements, about
$15,000.

HOWELL, S. A., was born in Geauga County, Ohio, in 1828, where he resided
until 1852, having traveled in the Southern States during the time. In 1852 he
sailed from New York, by steamer, to Chagress; from thence he worked his way
to Panama by small boat and on foot. At Panama he took passage on a Dutch
sailing ship for San Francisco, arriving in sixty-nine days. From this point
our friend went to Placerville, and engaged in mining until 1857, when for
four years he followed contracting and carpentering. In 1861 he moved to
Sacramento River, and continued contracting until 1866; at this time Mr.
Howell moved to his present location, known as “Daylor's Ranch,” on the
Cosumnes River, one of the first settled places in Sacramento County, where he
now keeps a store and the Post Office.

KURTZ, FREDRICK, lives sixteen miles from Sacramento and ten miles from
Brighton, his Post Office; was born in Germany in 1838; emigrated to the
United States with his parents in 1839, and lived in Ohio until 1854. He
started across the Plains in that year, but did not arrive in California until
1856, and settled in this county; he engaged in teaming until 1868, when he
returned to Ohio. He came back to California a year later, and again engaged
in teaming. He went to Nevada in 1872, and continued the business of teaming
until 1875, with four wagons and eighteen mules, over snow and all kinds of
roads. He owns five hundred and thirty-one acres, worth about $4,000; he is
now farming. He was married in 1877, to Miss Viola Shuck, a native of Oregon,
who has borne him one daughter, Pearly, born November 2, 1878.

LEPETIT, JOHN G., lives
seventeen miles east of Sacramento, and twelve miles from Brighton, his Post
Office; was born in Germany in 1846, and lived there until 1869; worked at
shoemaking from the time he was fourteen years of age until he was twenty
years old; was corporal in the army for three years; took second premium for
shooting. He emigrated to the United States and to California in 1869, and is
now farming; owns two hundred and seventeen acres of land, worth with
improvements, about $2,500. He was married in 1875 to Katie Bauman, a native
of Illinois; they have two children living, a son and a daughter.

LINDSAY, WILLIAM K., lives eighteen miles from Sacramento, and nine miles from
Elk Grove, his Post Office; was born in Kentucky in 1809, and lived there
until 1831; he removed to Illinois in that year, and remained there until
1850, engaged in the stock business; he then came to California, and settled
on the place where he now lives in October, 1852; owns twenty-four hundred
acres of land, assessed value $15 per acre. Mr. Lindsay was a member of the
Board of Supervisors in 1858, and was re-elected, but he resigned. He was
married in 1830 to Miss Sanders, a native of Kentucky; they have four
children, two sons and two daughters.

T. P., lives eighteen miles from Sacramento, and seven miles from Elk Grove,
his Post Office; was born in Missouri, in 1845, and lived there until 1853; he
came to California in that year, and remained in Nevada County until 1854,
when he went to San Francisco, and resided there until 1857; he then removed
to Sierra County, and stopped there about a year; settled in this county in
1875; owns six hundred and fifty acres of land. Mr. Lowe was married in 1872
to Miss Emma Jenkins, a native of Ohio; they have two children a son and a
daughter.

MIDDLEBURY, WILLIAM, lives eighteen miles from
Sacramento, and three miles from Cosumnes, his Post Office; was born in
Germany, in 1840, and lived there until 1858; emigrated to the United States

California and settled in this county; he owns one hundred and twenty acres of
land, worth, with improvements, about $4000. Mr. Middlebury was married in
1871 to Miss Sarah Dollarhide, a native of Virginia.

Cosumnes, his Post Office; was born in England, in 1825; he emigrated to the
United States in 1836, and settled in Illinois; he enlisted from that State in
1847, in the Sixteenth Volunteer Regiment, and served until the close of the
Mexican war; then engaged in lead mining in Illinois until 1854; he then came
to California, and lived in Nevada County until 1867, when he moved to this
county; owns two hundred and eighty acres of laud, worth about $5000. He was
married in 1851 to Miss Jane Kistle, a native of England; they have three
children a son and two daughters.

MURRAY, B. B., was born in Ireland, in 1830, and lived there until 1846; he
emigrated to the United States in that year, and lived in St. Louis, Missouri,
until 1850; he then came to this State, and settled in this county, in 1852.
He was married, in 1864, to Miss Annie Murray, also a native of Ireland, who
bore him nine children, seven of whom are living. Mr. Murray died April 4,
1877. His widow, Annie Murray, with her family, lives eighteen miles from
Sacramento; she owns three hundred and twenty acres of land; her Post Office
address is Elk Grove.

Elk Grove, his Post Office; was born in Ireland, in 1828, and lived there
until 1848; he emigrated to the United States in that year, and was engaged in
the pork business in St. Louis, Missouri, until 1850; he then went to Salt
Lake with Ben. Holliday; left there October 3, of same year, and came to El
Dorado County, California; in 1851, he left that county, and settled in this
county, where he now lives; owns three hundred and twenty acres of land,
worth, with improvements, about $7,500. He was married, in 1859, to Miss
Bridget Banks, also a native of Ireland.

PARKER, H. A., lives fourteen miles east of Sacramento, and eight miles from
Brighton, his Post Office; was born in Ohio, in 1828, and lived there until
1852, engaged in the manufacture of edge tools; he came to California in that
year, by way of the Isthmus; was one hundred and sixty-eight days coming from
Panama to San Francisco, and suffered a great deal on account of short
rations; he followed mining, in Tuolumne County, until 1853, when he went to
Klamath, and mined until 1859; he then returned to Ohio, and remained until
1860, when he drove stock across the plains to this county, and has since been
farming and teaming. Mr. Parker has since made two trips to Iowa, in 1872 and
1873. He was married in the last-mentioned year to Miss M. W. Wilcox, a native
of that State; they have one child a son. He owns five hundred and thirty-one
acres, worth about $8,000.

PATTERSON, JOHN, lives eighteen miles from Sacramento and nine miles from Elk
Grove his Post Office; was born in Ireland in 1839; emigrated to the United
States in 1848 and lived a short time in New Orleans; subsequently he removed
to Galena, Illinois, and remained there until 1852; he came to California in
that year and resided in Sierra County until 1859, when he settled in this
county and engaged in farming; owns two hundred and twenty-seven acres of
hand, worth, with improvements, about $10,000. He was married in 1878 to Miss
Anna English, a native of Illinois; they have one child a daughter.

mile from Cosumnes his Post Office; was born in Ireland in 1828 and lived
there until 1846; he emigrated to the United States in that year and remained
in New York until 1852; he then went to Massachusetts and resided there until
1863, when he came to California; he owns four hundred and seventy-five acres
of land. Mr. Pickett was married in 1859 to Miss Margaret Barry, who was born
in New York in 1839; they have five children Garrett George, born in

Sacramento on the old Jackson road; was born in New York in 1826 and lived
there until 1844; in that year he removed to Illinois and remained there until

settled in this county; followed teaming from Sacramento City to Amador County
until 1853; since then he has been farming and stock-raising; owns one
thousand acres, worth about $8000. Mr. Plummer was married in 1860 to Miss E.
B. Bailey, who was born in La Fayette County, Wisconsin, 1834; she came to
this State with her parents in 1853; they have four children living a son and
three daughters.

RENWICK, P., lives five miles from Cosumnes his Post Office and twenty-three
miles from Sacramento. He was born in 1812 in New York, and remained there
till 1834; then moved to Illinois, where he lived till 1850, when he came to
California. Returned after two years to Illinois, and there engaged in farming
till 1867, having served two years and ten months in the One hundred and
Twenty-seventh Illinois Infantry. In 1867 he returned to California. Was
married in 1839 to Miss A. M. Hatch, a native of New York. They have had three
boys two living and two girls one of whom is now living. Property is worth
about $8500.

RICHARDS, JOHN, lives eighteen miles from Sacramento City and seven miles from
Elk Grove his Post Office. Was born in England in 1826, and emigrated to
Wisconsin in 1845, where he was engaged in mining. In 1849 came across the
plains with the Rough and Ready Company, and stopped at Rough and Ready,
Nevada County, mining. In 1850 he returned to Wisconsin, via Panama, but came
back to this State after staying there three months. He again went to
Wisconsin in 1851, and remained until 1853, purchasing goods for California.
He then came to this State, and engaged in farming. In 1869 he went East by
rail with the California Pioneers. He was married in 1852 to a Wisconsin lady,
and they have three sons and five daughters. He owns 2000 acres of land,
valued at $30,000. A view of this place appears in this work.

SHELDON, W. C., lives eighteen miles from Sacramento, and two miles from
Cosumnes his Post Office; was born in this county in 1848. His father, in
company with Mr. Daylor, took up the tract of land known as the Sheldon Grant.
The subject of this sketch has lived on the grant all his life; he owns six
hundred and fifty acres, worth with improvements about $12,000. He was married
in 1872 to Miss Anna V. Cook, a native of New Jersey, and who has borne him
three children, all of whom are living two sons and a daughter.

Sacramento; was born in Ohio in 1848, and lived there until 1851; he crossed
the plains with his parents in that year, and settled in this county, where he

TAVERNER, THOMAS M.; Post Office, Cosumnes; lives twenty-five miles from
Sacramento; was born in England in 1833, and lived there until 1856; removed
to Canada in that year, and engaged in farming until 1858; he came to
California in 1859, and has since been farming and sheep raising; owns two
thousand acres; of land, worth, with improvements, about $16,000. Mr. Taverner
was married in Sacramento City, in 1874, to Miss Ester Ann Hirst, also a
native of England, born 1843: they have three children two sons and a

TAYLOR, CHARLES M.; Post Office, Coleville, Mono County; was born in Wisconsin
in 1832, and lived there until 1849; he came to California in that year, and
engaged in mining in El Dorado County until 1852; he then came to this county
and followed farming until 1861, when he engaged in stock-raising in Solano
County until 1863; then he moved to the State of Nevada and resided there
until 1868, when he came back to this county and remained here until 1873; in
that year he removed to Mono County, where he now resides. Mr. Taylor was
married in 1859 to Miss Frances Fletcher, a native of Lockport, New York; she
died in March, 1878: he has three children a son and two daughters.

TAYLOR, S. W., lives twenty miles from Sacramento, and three miles from
Cosumnes, his Post Office; was born in Pennsylvania in 1815; removed to
Illinois in 1821, and lived there until 1827, when he went to Wisconsin, and
made his home in that State until 1847; he then went to Texas, and resided
there until 1854. Mr. Taylor served as a volunteer during the Black Hawk War
in 1832, and also in the Mexican War in 1848. He came to this State in 1854,
and lived in Los Angeles County until 1856; he then came to this county, but
afterwards, in 1859, went to Solano County, and then, subsequently, to
Monterey County; he came back to this county in 1878. He was married in 1840
to Miss T. Davis, a native of Maryland; she died in 1851: he married again in
1853 to Miss Mary Knight, a native of Georgia, who died in 1875; he was
married the third time, in 1877, to Mrs. Woods, a native of Ohio. Mr. Taylor
is the father of sixteen children, eight of whom are living four sons and four
daughters.
