Blue Mountain Cemetery, Woody, Kern County, California Submitted by Billie Snyder 23 Jan 2008 This file is part of the California Genealogy & History Archives http://calarchives4u.com/ These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations. Persons or organizations desiring to use this material for non-commercial purposes, MUST obtain the written consent of the contributor, OR the legal representative of the submitter. The Blue Mountain Cemetery is located in a ranching community 40 miles north of Bakersfield, Kern, CA. To reach the cemetery from Bakersfield, take Hwy 65 north to Garces Hwy (155), turn east (right) toward the mountains and travel approximately 17 miles. The community of Woody is very small so if you can't readily find it, ask any community member for directions. This is not only an enumeration of the cemetery, but it also contains as much relevant family details as is known at this time. Information of persons who contributed substantially to the community but were buried elsewhere is also included. It is hoped that all that is presented, inlcuding anecdotes and character sketches, will help the seeker have a better understanding of the life and times of their family members as well as the community in which they lived. The two main cemeteries in the Woody/Glennville area are Blue Mountain in Woody and Oak Grove in Glennville. These two communities are only about ten miles apart. Some family members living closer to Glennville were buried in Oak Grove and those closer to Woody in Blue Mountain. If you don't find your relatives in one, you might want to look in the other. You might also want to check out the Obituary listing for Kern County Obits. ABERCROMBIE, LEON 1929 - 1960 Son of James & Ofilia Barnes Abercrombie. He married Virginia Olds. Kambick) and Samuel Graham Corky’ III (m. Bonnie Mae Englesen). Gilbert was a banjo player. His passion for music and performing kept him away from home a good portion of the time. It was not the life the pretty, petite and rather shy Ila envisioned. Shortly after their son was born, she moved back with their son to her parents home in Woody. In his youth, a blasting cap accident took part of Gil’s hand so he learned to play the banjo upside down and backwards using three fingers. Along with many other performers he joined the USO and entertained the troops during WWII primarily in the Pacific region. An accomplished musician, Gil ranked 2nd nation wide just behind renowned Eddie Peabody. Many that knew them both thought Gil was the better musician, but Eddie was the more captivating performer. Samuel Graham “Sam” is the son of John B. and Eleanor Anthony Crawford. He married Ila Mae Moore. Sam was a prolific reader who had an inquisitive mind and intense interest in history. He never pursued his academic potential perhaps because of the circumstances of his life, losing his mother when he was young and having to work to help keep the family together. Whatever the reason, when his father moved the family to Glennville, he turned his attention to being a cowboy. He loved riding the range, checking cattle, and had a special love of roping. He entered every roping competition in the area that he could. In 1959 he and Ila bought the old Seeley place in Woody, about 2 miles from her parents home where she was born.. And nestled close to her childhood home and also having four of her siblings (George, John, Dell and Gladys) nearby, Ila was content. Sam, with great relish, began living his dream. CURRAN, JAMES CURRAN The stone has nothing more than the name. To date, nothing definitive found on this individual. There is a James and Mary Curran listed in the 1930 Bakersfield, Dist 11 census adjacent to an Arthur Curran and family that is a possibility. That James was 68 years old and was born in New York.
