Russian River Cemetery, Ukiah (Y-4, Lot 2, NE) PIONEER SETTLER PASSES AWAY AT FAMILY HOME – Charles Bartlett, one of the oldest and best known pioneers of this district, passed away at the family home in this city Sunday evening, aged 65 years, 5 months and 10 days. Born in Overton county, Tennessee, he spent his earlier years in that state and in the state of Missouri, where his parents took up their residence when he was but a boy. When the Civil War broke out, he cast his lot with the south, and served with honor and distinction as a soldier of the Confederacy until he was forced to return home on account of broken health. On his return home he found conditions so deplorable that he decided to move westward. He spent a year in Nevada, and the next year came to Sonoma county. In 1867 he came to Mendocino county and settled on what is known as the Bartlett estate, on a part of which the town of Talmage and the Mendocino State Hospital is now located. In 1872 he married Miss Mary A. Phagan, who now survives him, along with two brothers, Zachariah and Clabe Bartlett, and two sisters Miss Elizabeth Bartlett and Mrs. Henrietta Menke. For fifty years Mr. Bartlett had been actively associated with the business, social and political life of the county. Always honest and industrious and an upright citizen whose unselfish life has endeared him to the whole community, it is with the deepest regret and sympathy that we hear of his passing. However, he has left behind him in the hearts of those who will treasure his memory a feeling of love that will never be forgotten. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon and the interment was in the local I. O. O. F. cemetery. Dispatch Democrat 2 April 1920. Charles Bartlett Dies At Age Of 85 – Charles Bartlett, for more than half a century a resident of the Ukiah valley, who died Sunday at the age of 85 years, was laid to rest in the local cemetery Tuesday. Mr. Bartlett was one of a family of eleven children to cross the palins from Tennessee with his mother, the late Mrs. Margaret Bartlett, and came to this county in 1866. They acquired one of the finest farms in the valley, consisting of 485 acres, a part of which was later given as a site for the Mendocino State Hospital. The surviving relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of many friends of the pioneer, who was active in the early development of the community.
