C, 12 Battl’n GA Light Artillery CSA Russian
River Cemetery, Ukiah (K-11, Lot 4, NW) ASSESSOR THOMAS
ANSWERS LAST CALL
– County Assessor M. A. Thomas passed away last Monday, July 29, about
2 o’clock in the afternoon at his home in Ukiah, succumbing to heart
complications which had assailed him about 18 months ago and which had
baffled the efforts of the most skillful physicians that could be
procured.
With the passing of Mr. Thomas went one
of our pioneer settlers as well as one of the most faithful servants of
the people that ever entered the court house.
He was born at Macon, Georgia, December
15, 1846, and was the son of Dr. J. R. and S. R. Thomas. The privileges
of school were denied him by reason of the war of the Rebellion, which
broke out when he was 14 years old. At the age of 16 he enlisted as a
private in the service of the Confederacy and served until wounded and
taken to the Union prison hospital in Washington City, where he remained
until the close of the war. He was then taken to Savannah, Ga., from
which place, though still suffering severely from his wound, he walked
to his home in Macon.
In December, 1867, he came with his
parents by way of Panama to California where he resided in Solano county
until the fall of 1868, when he moved to Redwood valley in this county,
where he engaged in general ranching with his father.
In February, 1876, he was married to
Martha E. Hughes and from this union were born six children, of which
three daughters and two sons are living – Mrs. Mary Todd, Misses Kate
and Ruth Thomas, Dr. Robert Thomas, of Ukiah and Attorney Anderson
Thomas, of San Francisco.
In 1898 Mr. Thomas was the nominee of
the Democratic party for the office of county assessor, to which he was
elected and which he held as the result of three successive elections
until the time of his death. He was one of the best official that the
county ever had in that capacity, and that his administration was
appreciated by the people is amply attested by the fact that he was
returned to office so regularly.
The funeral service was held Wednesday
at the M. E. Church, South, being preached by Rev. J. E. Moore, who
rendered the deceased a high tribute. The service at the grave was under
the auspices of Abell Lodge, F. & A. M. A large concourse attended
both services.
He was a member of the Knights Templar
and the Improved Order of Redmen. Dispatch Democrat 2 August
