Mojave Desert News; 11 Aug 1949 TRUCK DRIVER IN FATAL ACCIDENT While driving south on Highway 395 last Wednesday morning, August 3, in a truck, Nicholas William Baven of 174 So. Clarence St, Los Angeles, traveling at a high rate of speed attempted to negotiate a curve and ran off the highway. He retained the presence of mind and attempted to pull it back on but he side swiped a north bound car which had pulled off the road when the driver, Frank Lewis saw the on-coming vehicle. The Baven truck cab caught fire throwing out the driver whose clothing had become ignited. Lewis and his passenger, who were slightly injured in the accident, attempted to quench the fire in Baven’s clothes. He was taken to the Ridgecrest Hospital by Deputy Constable Monk of Red Mountain where he died five hours later. The body which was prepared for burial by O’Donnell Funeral Home was sent to Los Angeles for burial.
