Source Unknown; 06 Dec 1945 Auto Accident Claims Five Lives One of the most horrible automobile accidents in the history of this part of Kern county happened last Thursday morning between the hours of 12 midnight and 1 a. m. claiming five lives when a car going south driven by John T. Waldrip of Lancaster crashed head on into a car driven by Matilda Chavez, Jr., five miles south of Mojave on Highway 6 coming north. Riding with Mrs. Chavez were Joseph Brown and M. A. Chavez of Mojave and Mrs. Sarah Black and her 4-year old son of Bishop who had met the Chavez party in Palmdale where they had stopped for dinner on their way home from a visit to Los Angeles. Joseph Brown, Mrs. Black and her son were instantly killed and Matilda Chavez and M. A. Chavez formerly proprietor of the Tower Cafe in Mojave were taken to the Mojave hospital where Mr. Chavez died next day at 2 p. m. and Matilda Chavez succumbing later. Mr. Waldrip was taken to the Lancaster hospital where he later died. Witnesses of the accident were Harry Gagon and Edward Williams who were on the road to their homes in Lancaster following the Waldrip car. Officer Clark investigated the accident and the O'Donnell Funeral Home ambulance took the bodies of the dead to their mortuary and the injured to the hospitals. The funerals of Mr. Chavez and a Mr. Brown were held on Saturday with the following pall bearers: Ralph Claybrook, Dave Chavez, Ralph Lyons, Cecil Richardson, Cliff Bell and Jack White.
