Source Unknown; Date Unknown George Russell "Sonny" Cantrell California City, California resident, George Russell "Sonny" Cantrell, passed away on October 4, 2003 at home from lung cancer. He was born on February 10, 1936 in Okemah, Oklahoma and had worked as a truck driver for Kemiron Pacific Co. in Mojave, California. George has left this world in the flesh, but his spirit will remain always in the hearts of his family and friends. "Sonny" was a loving and adoring husband, beloved father, "DAD," gracious and caring grandfather, and trusted friend. He was always ready to lend a helping hand by opening his home to those in need. Although Sonny did not attend church on a regular basis, his faith and love in God was strong. He showed his love for God by contributing to the Evangelistic Ministry of Reverend Guadalupe Herrera, and also donations and assisting with fund-raising projects for the Church of God of Prophecy. Sonny began his career in Truck driving in the 1950s and from the period of 1985-1998 he received five awards for "Safe Driver" accomplishing over 3,500,000 miles of safe driving. Sonny also was a talented singer/musician and played several instruments such as lead, steel, bass and twelve string guitar. He loved country music and patterned his talents after artists like Chet Atkins, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash to mention a few. In his spare time, Sonny would entertain himself by playing video games with his friends and grandchildren. He loved a challenging game of chess and spent hours playing video games like PacMan, Super Mario Bros. and his favorite games Zelda and Super Metroid. Sonny's passion was to manicure his yard on weekends, which was a beautiful garden that brought his family so much pleasure. Sonny had so many wonderful attributes and we regret not being able to repay him and tell him how thankful we are for his generosities. We miss him dearly, but we know he is still watching over us. He was predeceased by his father Eddie T. Cantrell in 1966, mother Flossie A. Cantrell in 1994 and a son Edward E. Cantrell in 1960. Sonny is survived by his wife of 18 years, Angelica Cantrell of California City, son Audie Cantrell of Bakersfield, California, daughters, Sue Goodwin of Stockton, California, Vickie Lawrence of Tulare, California, stepdaughter Sylvia Herrera of California City; sisters, Evelyn Curtsinger of Corcoran, California, Mildred Wright of Visalia, California, Linda Yantis of Corcoran, and Faye Sardinna of Visalia.
