Source Unknown; 23 Jul 1953 One Killed and One Injured One man was killed and one slightly injured when a car and hay-truck crashed headon early Wednesday morning 18 miles north of Mojave on Hiway 6. Killed instantly was Roy Chandler of 642 D Prefab Street, China Lake, driver of the car. He apparently went to sleep at the wheel, swerving across the road directly into the path of the heavily loaded truck and trailer. Driver of the truck was John P. Vink, of Norwalk, who was accompanied by his two children, Yvonne age 10 and Richard, 6. In the resultant melee, the truck overturned. The children escaped injury, while the father received bruises and abrasions. Hay was scattered all over the highway. O'Donnell ambulance was called and brought the dead man back to Mojave, where his body was prepared for shipment to Fresno for burial. Mr Chandler leaves his wife, Olivia and son Edward, 13, of China Lake. Mr. Chandler was a veteran oj World War II and was a member of the American Legion of Ridgecrest. State Highway Patrolman R Troxler investigated the accident
