Funeral services were held in the New Life Assembly of God Church, California 
City on Friday, June 19,1998, for Afra Emperatrice Chavez, 54, who passed away 
at her residence on June 16, 1998.
Afra was born to her parents Alfonso and Margarita Hernandez in Fair Oaks, 
California on December 5, 1943. She was a resident of Kern County for 42 years. 
For a period of fifteen years she was an assistant manager of a Big S Grocery 
Store. One of Afra's interests in Me which gave her much pleasure was that of 
baking for her loved ones. Afra was a Christian woman who focused her love and 
attention on her children 
Afra is survived by daughters, Tammy Lynn Thompkins and her husband, Christopher 
of Ocean Springs, MS, Sandra Prim and Husband, David of Rosamond; brothers, Tony 
Chavez, Jr. and wife, Janey of California City, Tommy Chavez of Goshen, Indiana 
and Samuel Chavez of California City; eleven grandchildren; sisters, Annie 
Rodriquez of Tulare, Yolanda Perez and Gracie Huerta, both of Bakersfield, Eva 
Salcido of Lynnwood; brothers, Alfonso Hernandez of Los Angeles, Robert, Pete, 
Armando, and Daniel Hernandez, all of Bakersfield and Ralph Hernandez of Los 
Angeles. Afra was preceded in death by twins, a sister and brothers, Richard and 
Manuel Hernandez.
Pastor Phil Owens officiated at the services. Interment followed the services at 
the Tehachapi Public Cemetery - Westside. Wood Family Funeral Service handled the 
arrangements.
