Source Unknown; Date Unknown Graveside services were held May 17, 1999, for long-time Mojave resident Marion Mack Deaver who passed away May 14, 1999 from a long illness. Mrs. Deaver was a former southeast Kern correspondent for the Bakersfield Californian and later wrote for the Mojave Desert News when it was owned by her son and daughter-in-law. i Mrs. Deaver was born in Bakersfield June 15, 1907 and was a graduate of Stanford University. She and her husband Paul, who preceded in her death in1990, lived in Bakersfield, Madera, Taft, Riverdale and Arvin before moving to Mojave in 1948, where they spent the rest of their lives. During World War II, Mrs. Deaver was active in the Red Cross Home Nursing Program, the USO and other charitable activities supporting the war effort. She operated a florist business in Mojave for many years and was active, with her husband, in local service organizations, and was a part-time registrar of vital statistics for the Kern County Health Department. An avid student of history, she and her husband were charter members of the Kern-Antelope Historical Society, and during her years with the Californian she interviewed a number of East Kern pioneers and reported on the region's rich historical background. Mrs. Deaver is survived by her son Bill, editor of the Southeast Kern Weekender and his wife Billye, son Michael, a former top aide to Governor and later President Ronald Reagan and his wife Carolyn of Bethesda, Maryland, daughter Susan Strahan of Mojave, grandchildren, Amanda of Bethesda, Md., Blair of Redlands, California; Clayton and Meg Strahan of Mojave, Michael Strahan of Bakersfield and his wife Keala, and one great-grandchild, Leilani Strahan of Bakersfield. Services were conducted by Reverend Grant Frye and Dwayne Rufener and arrangements were under the direction of Stickel Mortuary of Mojave. Internment was in Mojave Cemetery.
