Mojave Desert News; 18 Aug 1949 Worst Crash in History of This District Friday On Friday evening, August 12 about 9:30 p.m., 11 miles north of Mojave on Highway 6, a car driven by Jack J. Haggerty, 33, of 316 Bird St., Manhattan Beach, drove under the rear of a truck that was stalled on the shoulder of the road. Mr. Haggerty, who is a grandson of J. D. Haggerty owner of the J. H. Haggerty mercantile establishment of Los Angeles, and his wife, Margery, 33, who was a passenger in his car, were instantly killed, their bodies being imprisoned in the wreckage. The remains were taken to the O'Donnell Funeral Home in Mojave where an inquest was held Saturday morning, August 13. It was brought out at the inquest that the truck which was driven by Jerry E. Sorenson of Gunnison, Utah, was legally parked with adequate flares and no . blame could be attached to him. The wreck, one of the worst of its kind in this district according to Officer Lorne Sanders, was towed in by Bud's Garage where it may be viewed by anyone interested in finding out the folly of excessive speed, especially at night.
