Harmon of Batesburg, S.C., passed away suddenly on May 27 at the age of 47. Steve was a very loving, family-oriented man who believed that without God or his family, he was nothing. He was a very devoted husband to his wife Susan, with whom he spent the last 20 years, and a loving father to his daughter Mallory, who followed in his footsteps by graduating from high school with honors. Steve was a hard-working man who would not let a day go by when he was not working in his shop, doing things in the yard or going to his place of business. Steve did fiberglass body work on cars and painted them. He was not satisfied unless it was perfect, believing that if it was not perfect, it was not complete. Although he was a very hard worker, he managed to make time for his family and NASCAR, the one sport that could get Steve to actually sit down and relax. Throughout his life he admired a few race car drivers but the two that come to mind are Davey Allison and Ernie Irvin. When Davey died in 1993, Steve was grief stricken. Steve loved life and he lived it to the fullest. Never a day went by when he was not thankful for another day and he bestowed this love for life and thankfulness to God upon his daughter, Mallory. Steve's family meant so much to him that he, his wife and daughter drove 3,000 miles from South Carolina to Tehachapi for the opportunity to give his step-daughter away in marriage. While in Tehachapi he touched many people's lives deeply. His friends are all saddened by his death and he will be greatly missed. Steve leaves behind his loving, caring and devoted wife, Susan; daughter, Mallory, of Batesburg, S.C.; step-daughters and sons-in- law, Amy Garcia (Ben) of Tehachapi, April Waddell (Lee) and Michele Painter of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Loretta and Yvonne; brother, Daniel; 11 step-grandchildren; his favorite niece by marriage, Audrey Burton; and a host of other family and friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Ruben and Pearl Harmon of Batesburg, S.C. Milton-Shealy funeral home handled the arrangements in Batesburg, S.C.
