Source Unknown; 24 Apr 1952 Death Caused By Tire Blowout A blowout was the cause of a head-on collision Saturday afternoon, resulting in death to one woman and major injuries to a father and infant son. The accident occurred at 12:30 p.m. on Highway 466 9˝ miles east of Mojave. A car driven by Neil E. Lance, Seattle went out of control after a tire blew out and swerved into the path of another car coming from the opposite direction driven by Adoniran Peake, accompanied by his wife and 3 small children of Lafayette, Calif. The impact was so great that the engine of the Lance car was torn from its mountings and was found lying several yards away. Mrs. Peake was thrown from his car and found beside the road. The other occupants of the Lance car were Miss Alberta Englehart, Lance's fiancé and her mother Mrs. Alma Alberta Heaton, both of Arlington, Calif. All the persons involved were brought to the Mojave Hospital by the O'Donnell ambulance. Mrs. Heaton died there Tuesday morning at 9:30 A.M. from her injuries. Mr. Peake received treatment for a shattered heel bone and the smallest of the Peake children, John, 8 months, was found to have a broken thigh bone. The others received only minor injuries. The Peake family have been sent to Oakland where father and son will be hospitalized for further treatment. Mr. Peake is employed in that city with the Kaiser Steel Corp. Further injury to the Peake children was possibly avoided by the quick thinking of Mrs. Peake. On seeing they were going to crash, she turned and swept the children from the back seat onto the floor. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Heaton are pending at the O'Donnell Funeral Home. She is survived, in addition to her daughter, by her mother Mrs. George Heaton, also of Arlington.
