Mojave Desert News; 12 Feb 1948 Local Man Killed in Jawbone Canyon Accident Plunging over a 30 foot embankment in Jawbone Canyon when the Jeep in which they were riding apparently hit a soft place in the road on Monday, John G. Hempel, an employee of White's Motel and Service Station who was a passenger in his own jeep driven by Bonnie G. Beacon, 25, a fellow employee, was instantly killed on a mine access road about 30 miles north of Mojave. Miss Beacon, who was brought to the Mojave hospital for treatment escaped with only minor abrasions. O'Donnell Funeral Home ambulance performed the necessary transportation and stated that the pair had been on a visit to Garringer Bros. mine and was en route home when the accident occurred. Johnny was a marine corps veteran and was well known to everyone here. He leaves besides Mrs. Nan Mobley, his foster mother, five brothers and five sisters, one of whom, Mrs. Pfister of East Paris, N. J., came put by plane to make arrangements for the funeral. He was born in East Patterson, N. J., February 10, 1917. ' Funeral services will be held, Friday, Feb. 13, 9 a. m., at the Community Church with Rev. John Hanchett, pastor officiating. Interrment will take place in Inglewood cemetery at 2 p. m. under the direction of O'Donnell Funeral Home.
