Mojave Desert News; 23 Jul 1947 PROMINENT DOCTOR FATALLY INJURED On Friday last, July 18, at 8:45 p. m., Dr. Carl William Johnson, prominent physician of Taft, collided with a road roller being used for the repair of Hwy 466 and driven by Harry Lee Sawyer, 5421 Ash Street, Los Angeles, employee of Basich Bros. Construction Co., who have the contract for the road work, who was operating the roller after dark without lights of any kind. The accident occurred about 15 miles east of Mojave, and the doctor's car was a total wreck. He lived for about nine hours after being taken to the Mojave Hospital by the O'Donnell Fun eral Home ambulance. Mojave Desert News; 4 Sep 1947 Harry Lee Sawyer was bound over to the Superior Court to answer to the charge of manslaughter this week. Sawyer was the operator of the road roller which was involved in an accident that took the life of a Doctor from Taft. He was released on $3,000 bail.
