Mojave Desert News; 2 Jun 1938 Miner Hurt, Doctor Killed In Wrecks Near Mojave Mr Al Meyers, famous as the discoverer of Goldfield, is in the Phil J. Vogel Hospital suffering from grave injuries sustained in an automobile accident on the Bishop road three miles from Mojave, Saturday evening. He was picked up unconscious after being thrown from his car as it overturned and left the highway. He was alone and was so severely hurt it was impossible to question him to learn the cause of the accident. Mr Meyers is 65 years old and the lacerations about his head, back: and chest injury will necessitate his remaining in the hospital for some time. Mrs. Meyers has come down from their home in Hollywood to be with her husband. In an accident on the same road the evening before Dr Kanavel, internationally famous surgeon, was killed when his car crashed into the rear of a truck and trailer. His two young sons and their two boy friends in the car with him are said not to have been seriously hurt. They are reported to have been en route from Pasadena to fishing grounds near Bishop. A former chief surgeon of Northwestern Medical School and author of important medical books, Dr. Kanavel is considered "tops" in the profession.
