Source Unknown; Date Unknown Feb. 22, 1909 – June 13, 2004 A memorial funeral service will be held Thursday, July 1 at 11 a.m. in the Wood Family Funeral Service chapel for Philip Daniel Marx, 95, who passed away at his home in Tehachapi on June 13. Philip went to a local elementary school but attended high school at San Rafael Military Academy. Following graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to live with his brother Walter Marx, where he worked for Foster Clyzer (the billboard company). He also worked for Southern California Gas Company a short time. He returned to Tehachapi in 1930 to work in the family banking business, then known as the Bank of Tehachapi. Upon his return to Tehachapi, Philip met Mildred Roscoe, who had come to teach in the local school. In the fall of 1932, Mildred accepted his proposal and became his wife. Philip also worked at Monolith Cement Plant. He was appointed to the city council to fill an unexpired term, then won re-election to a second term. At the time he left the bank, he purchased a partnership in the Tehachapi Hay and Grain Company, which was later renamed the Tehachapi Supply Company, and became a hardware store, which was located on the property that now houses the Village Grille. Philip was in business for 26 years. During those years, he was active in community affairs as a master mason, serving as master of the lodge and received the Hiram award. He went on to serve as secretary and treasurer. He was also a member and officer of the Exchange Club, High Twelve and the Lions Club. Philip was an active member of the Tehachapi Congregational Church for 50 years. He served on the Tehachapi Public Cemetery Board from 1969 to 1997, 20 years of that time as president. Upon his retirement, the cemetery board dedicated the office building at the Westside Cemetery in his honor. A plaque noting this honor was placed on the building. Philip was very proud of his heritage and family roots that were deeply embedded in Tehachapi for so many years. He was continually amazed at how big Tehachapi had grown. He very much wanted to live to be 100 years old and ride the old fire engine that was purchased while he was on the city council in the festival parade that year. Philip is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Morphis of Tehachapi; sister, Karlyn Horton and her husband John of San Rafael; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Marx in February, 2002. Reverend Diane Ryder, Worshipful Brother Paul Smith and Chaplain Royal Mink will officiate at the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Philip's memory to the Tehachapi Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 734, Tehachapi, CA 93581. Wood Family Funeral Service handled the cremation arrangements.
