Another of Mojave's old-time residents has passed on, one who will be remembered by the majority or her citizens for the past 20 years for his kindly ways and pleasant manners. Judge William A. Mattox, as he was familiarly known to folks here, was born October 10, 1872 in Edinburg, Ill. and came to Mojave September 11, 1930 where he accepted employment with the Los Angeles Dept. of Water and Power, a position he held for 8 years, until October 15, 1938, when he retired. Prior to coming to work for the Department he had been in the employ of the Knights of Phythias Lodge. After his retirement, he ran for and was elected Justice of the Peace and successfully served in that position for eight consecutive years, retiring in 1947 on account of illness. His health, failed visibly after his retirement from the Bench, he suffered three strokes with long periods of illness in between. His residence was next door to the new Maxwell building on the corner of Cerro Gordo and J Street. He died in the General Hospital in Los Angeles on August 1, 1952. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ruby Carawan of Los Angeles and a son, William Forest Mattox of San Francisco.
