Source Unknown; Date Unknown July 26, 1924 – Sept. 2, 2004 Robert Chester "Bob" Nelson, 80, passed away at his residence in Bear Valley Springs, where he had lived for the past 24 years. Bob was born July 26, 1924, to Carl and Bernice Nelson in Washington, D.C. He attended McAllister College in Minnesota before enlisting in the Army Air Corps to become a fighter pilot flying P-51's during World War II. Robert was married to Carolyn Conner Herrell in 1947 in San Francisco. He enjoyed a 35-year career with United Airlines, retiring as a sales manager in Los Angeles. Bob was a very active member of the community of Bear Valley Springs, having served on the board of the BVS Community Services District, the BVS Association and the ECC. He was a member of the Bear Valley Springs Community Church, the Men's Club and the Sportsman's Club through the years. His interests included reading, music, planting trees, gardening, traveling, camping, sports and politics Bob will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carolyn; his daughter, Marianne Maxwell and Mike; son, Chris Nelson; granddaughters, Erin and Meghan Maxwell; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Bear Valley Springs Community Church on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1523 California Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93304.
