Mojave Desert News; 27 Jan 1949 EAST KERN ITEMS JOHANNESBURG-Final tribute was paid by the many friends of Charles Norman who was laid to rest in the Rand District Community Cemetery on Wednesday. Funeral services were conducted by the Reverend H. D. Suydam, of the Methodist Community Church. Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara were the directors in charge. Born in Nagoni, Michigan in 1863, Charles Norman spent his early life in the iron mines of the great Messabi range near Duluth, Minn. The lasting incentive for mining took Norman next to the Black Hills in South Dakota, and then to Cripple Creek, Colorado where he was a successful owner of several gold and silver mines, and where he raised his family. Coming then to the Rand District at the time when the Big Kelly Silver was discovered he was the first foreman at the Kelly. He watched the first 48 tons of ore brought out of the Kelly, which brought mint receipts of over a million and half dollars. Later on Mr. Norman moved to Johannesburg where he lived and had a gold mine of interesting values, but litigation came into the picture and he did not produce, but never lost faith that one day the title would clear and he would work the mine. However, ill health came first and his survivors will probably work the mine. They are his son, Eddie and two daughters, Mrs. Laura Tille and Mrs. Charlotte Eaton all of Southern California.
