He was born in Herrin, Illinois on August 8, 1917. He was 87 years old. John is survived by his wife of 68 years this Valentine's Day, Lillian Pengilley; daughters Yvonne and Husband Robert Brown of Shingle Springs, Betty and husband Jesse Andrade of Shingle Springs and Phyllis Gross of Mojave; brother William and wife Julia Pengilley of Rosamond; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great- grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his cat, Kit Cat. John was a great athlete in high school, earning several letters in football, basketball and track. He served in the United States Navy, was a member of the Elks Club and a 50-plus year member of the Carpenters Union. John lived and worked in Mojave, California for the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. After his retirement in 1980 he continued to live in Mojave until this past October when he moved with his wife to Shingle Springs. John was a criminal history buff and loved to read and watch anything related to detectives, trials or criminals. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, getting together with the boys for Monday Night Football, and especially time with his family.
