Mojave Desert News; 04 Jul 2002 Robert Louis Powell, a former resident of Boron, CA passed away at his home in Virginia on June 28, 2002 at the age of 79. He was born October 30, 1922 in Arkansas. Mr. Powell served in the United States Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946 patrolling the Mississippi River performing "homeland security" duties. He moved his family from Illinois to California in 1960 settling in the Tehachapi area where he worked for number of years at California Portland Cement Company using welding skills he learned in the Coast Guard. Mr. Powell retired after 16 years at U.S. Borax where he was employed as a millwright. An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed camping and fishing in the mountains and desert of Kern County. Mr. Powell is survived by his wife Ruth Powell of Virginia; his children, Bobbie Snider of Earlimart, CA, Pam Keller of Bakersfield and Milo Powell of Boron; sister, Joe Ladd of Arkansas; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
