DOUBLE TRAGEDY SHOCKS ALL BORON

Boron was greatly shocked over the death on Sept. 20, of Lil McElrath and Jean 
Roberts, better known to their friends in Boron as Lil and Jean, who operated the 
Lil and Jean Cafe one and one half miles east of Boron in San Bernardino County. 
It seems like Lil and Jean had enjoyed an evening in Boron with friends. On 
returning to the Cafe, the two girls got in an argument and it was reported that "Lil" 
shot Jean twice in the left breast, killing her instantly.
Before Mr. Benny Blaw, who had accompanied the girls back to the Cafe could 
prevent her, Lil committed suicide by shooting herself in the right temple. Mr. Blaw 
immediately reported the case to Deputy Sheriff Williams in Boron, who investigated 
the case and wired San Bernardino County authorities about same. Before coming to 
this part of the Mojave desert, Lil and Jean were in the Cafe business in Quartzsite, 
Arizona. I was informed that Lil served during the war in the Wasps.
Boron extends its sincere sympathy to both Lil and Jean's parents and family. The 
inquest into the death of the two girls will be held in Barstow on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 
the O'Donnel Funeral Parlor at 10 a.m.
