Source Unknown; Date Unknown Dec. 27, 1933 – June 2, 2004 Sibyl Carleen Roberts, 70, of Alpine Forest, a charter member of the Tehachapi Summit Singers and an accomplished zither player, died of cancer Wednesday, June 2, in her home. Growing up in Memphis, Tenn., Sibyl Roberts' love of music started at an early age. At just 4 years of age, Sibyl asked her mother if she could learn how to play the violin. Her mother demurred and she sought other outlets for musical expression. She played the baritone saxophone in the high school marching band and sang in the church choir every Sunday. Once done with high school, Sibyl bravely moved to Los Angeles with her aunt and uncle's family. There she took voice lessons and lived for a while with her voice instructor. After meeting and marrying David Roberts and having two children, Sibyl had little time to sing except at family gatherings. Sibyl worked as an office manager for a public relations firm in Los Angeles for many years. When she moved to Washington State with her children Sibyl found a lawyer who was willing to teach her to be a legal secretary, a profession that carried her through to retirement. Upon retirement and moving up to Tehachapi from the San Fernando Valley, Sibyl looked for a way to re- establish her love for singing. She saw an ad for the Summit Singers and told her neighbor they would have to join. That began a rewarding relationship with many wonderful musicians. Sibyl is survived by daughter, Debra; sister, Mary Bridgewater; brother, James Winters; and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held at 18341 Alps Drive, Sunday, June 6, from 1 p.m. on. In lieu of flowers, her family is accepting donations in her name to the Tehachapi Performing Arts Center Foundation, PMB 399, 785 Tucker Road, Tehachapi, California 93561. Wood Family Funeral Service handled the cremation arrangements. NOTE: Photo At: http://www.calarchives4u.com/photos/kern/
