Mojave Desert News; 20 Jul 1948 HEAD-ON ACCIDENT COSTS LIFE A head-on collision, between a pick-up truck driven by Samuel Rush of Redondo Beach and a Ford coupe with Howard Archer of Fontana at the wheel took the life of Mr. Rush when the two cars came together on Highway 466, 16 miles east of Mojave on Wednesday night last at 11 p.m. Evidence obtained at the scene of the accident indicated that Archer was driving on the wrong side of the road. He was taken to the Mojave Hospital by O'Donnell's ambulance for first aid after which he was removed to the McCormick Hospital in Pasadena, suffering from severe injuries. Your reporter was at a farewell party being tendered, to Sid Alderson when Highway Officer Lorne Sanders telephoned in for a tow car, and accepting a ride with Bud Palmer accompanied by Leroy Wilson and Blackie Rife, sped to the scene and found the cars so badly wedged together that it took the combine efforts of Varney's tow truck and that of Bud Palmer hooked on opposite sides to pull them apart According to Officer Sanders Archer faces several charges upon his return from the hospital.
