Source Unknown; 12 May 1955 Plane Crash Kills Marine Lieutenant A cloud of black pungent smoke arose from the runway of the Mojave M. A. A. S. last Thursday, May 5, a little after 5 p.m. caused by the crash of an F-9-F fighter plane. Instantly killed was First Lieutenant Robert A. Shepherd, Jr, who was taking the ship off for a routine training flight. Lt. Shepherd, 23, had been assigned to the Mojave Base just two weeks ago.
