Source Unknown; Date Unknown Man dies in truck crash DESERT NEWS STAFF REPORT INYOKERN — Garald Smith, 57, of Mojave died October 2nd when he apparently suffered a heart attack, which caused the mail truck he was driving to crash, according to the California Highway Patrol and the Kern County Coroner's office. Smith was northbound on Highway 395 2.6 miles north of Highway 14 at 5:06 a.m. when he suffered the attack. His vehicle, a 1991 International box truck, veered to the right onto the shoulder and then back to the left across the north- and southbound lanes. It then drove through a perimeter fence and crossed Sterling Road where it overturned on its right side. The truck was carrying mail, including about 300 absentee ballots bound for Inyo County. None of the mail was spilled and all was recovered.
