Benge, a resident of Yucaipa and longtime member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, died Feb. 9 at Redlands Community Hospital. He was 54. He was born April 21, 1953, at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino, to Lois and Wilburn Benge, and grew up in San Bernardino, graduating from Pacific High School in 1971. He was a member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for 32 years, attaining the rank of sergeant. He had a variety of assignments with the Sheriff's Department, including corrections, patrol, narcotics and special investigations, and was an original member of the Sheriff's Career Criminal Division in 1983. At the time of his sudden death he was assigned to the Sheriff's Yucaipa Station. He worked at Fedco before joining the Sheriff's Department in 1976. His family said he loved to work with his hands, from building his house to caring for his yard and fixing things. He also enjoyed the outdoors and loved to go fishing. His family said he often told them he loved them. His father died in 1991. Survivors include his mother Lois Benge, his wife Carolyn Benge, his son Chad Benge and his daughter Laura Benge, all of Yucaipa; his brother Charles Benge and wife Alice of Huntington Beach; and cousins and nephews. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Yucaipa Christian Church, 12954 Bryant St., Yucaipa, followed by a reception at the church. Emmerson-Bartlett Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Yucaipa Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team at 34282 Yucaipa Blvd., Yucaipa, CA 92399.
