Redlands Daily Facts Newspaper; 02/07/2008 Clarence Lappinga, 87 Clarence Lappinga, a longtime resident of Redlands, died Feb. 4 at Pymouth Village in Redlands, following a long illness. He was 87. He was born March 30, 1920, in Holland, Mich., and moved to Redlands in 1922. Growing up in Redlands he attended Redlands Christian School, graduating in 1934, and graduated from Redlands High School in 1937. He was a carrier for the Redlands Daily Facts when he was young, riding his bicycle on his paper route. He married Grace De Wit of Redlands in 1942. From 1943 to 1945 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. When he returned to Redlands, he worked for General Telephone Company in Redlands for 35 years. He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church for 85 years, first the Redlands Christian Reformed Church, then The River Christian Reformed Church. His daughter Glenda VanderKam said said his family was important to him. "His grandchildren were very dear to him and very important to him, and he especially enjoyed his `walkie-talkies,' the walks he took with his grandchildren," she said. He was preceded in death by his brothers Lester, John and Hans Lappinga, his son Clarence Bernard "CB" Lappinga and son-in-law Jerry VanderKam. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Grace Lappinga; his daughters Glenda VanderKam and Carol VanderBaan and husband Harvey; his sons Don Lappinga and wife Jean and Paul Lappinga and wife Helene; his brother Harold Lappinga; his sisters Fenna Cooper and Sophia Molenkamp; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at noon Friday, Feb. 8, at The River Christian Reformed Church, 459 E. Highland Ave., Redlands. Cortner Chapel is handling arrangements.
