San Diego Union; December 9, 1869

On Wednesday, December 1 at 1o’clock P.M., at the Rancho Guadalupe, 
Lower California. Don Jose Mathias Moreno departed this life, aged 51 years six 
months.
The deceased was widely known in this part of the State and was a man 
of much influence in Lower California, where he has been living for some years. 
Under Governor Pio Pico he held the office of Secretary of State of California. 
He died of apoplexy. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his death, 
besides a number of near relatives and attached friends.
