San Diego Union; May 21, 1910 CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES IN THIS CITY Had Served as Sanitary Inspector Under Municipal Administration After a lingering illness Dr. J.A. Smith, city sanitary inspector, a prominent member of the Grand Army of the Republic and a Mason, died at 8:15 o'clock yesterday morning at his residence, Getti and Ingalls streets, Washington Heights. Death was due to angina pectoris. He was 64 years of age the 10th of this month and had been a resident of San Diego about 10 years. Dr. Smith was appointed sanitary inspector shortly after the present administration came into office, and from that time he led an active life up to a few weeks ago, when he had to give up the work. He had been falling for some time. Before coming to San Diego Dr. Smith had been a resident of Kansas and Missouri, and previous to that served through the Civil War. He was a member of the Tenth Kansas volunteer infantry and the greater part of his service during the war was spent in Kentucky and Tennessee. He was with Sherman on his march to the sea as far as Atlanta. He returned north with the Union forces and was severely wounded at the battle of Frankfort. He was prominent in G.A.R. circles of Missouri, having at one time been chief of staff and later commander in chief. For a number he was chairman of the Republican central committee of the state of Missouri and included among his friends some of the most prominent political leaders of the middle west. He was a practicing physician in Missouri for twenty five years and for several years was president of the Missouri State Medical association. After giving up medicine he went into the ministry, serving in the pulpit in various cities in Kansas for ten years. After coming to San Diego he was engaged most of his time in the real estate business. Deceased is survived by a widow and four children-Mrs. C.F. Naylor of 3943 Lincoln avenue, LeRoy L. Smith of Los Angeles, Charles W. Smith, an Associated Press telegraph operator at Kansas City, and S.M. Smith of Williamsport, Pa. Funeral arrangements will be made when Mrs. Smith hears from her sons in the east. San Diego Union; May 22, 1910 SMITH-In this city. May 20, 1910, Dr. James A. Smith, beloved husband of Mrs. Priscilla A. Smith and father of Mrs. C.P. Naylor of this city, Royal L. Smith of Los Angeles, Charles W. Smith of Kansas City, Mo., and Sanford M. Smith of Williamsport, Pa.; a native of Indiana, aged 64 years, 10 months. Friends and members of Heintzelman Post, G.A.R., and F. & A.M. members are respectfully invited to attend the funeral services to be held at Bradley & Woolman's chapel, Monday, May 23, at 2:30 o'clock p.m. Rev. W.E. Crabtree, assisted by Rev. H.A. Morgan, will officiate. Interment Masonic cemetery.
