Malais, Steven James ANDERSON- Steve Malais, 45, of Anderson, passed away at his home suddenly last Sunday, February 3, 2008, of a brain aneurysm. The son of Fred Eli Malais and Erin Michelle (Le Gate) Malais, Steve was born on April 17, 1962 in La Mesa, CA. Raised in Southern California, Steve graduated from Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach in 1980. Having a lifelong love of water and boating, two years after graduation, Steve joined the Coast Guard and spent the next 20 years serving his country. His years in the Coast Guard saw him stationed in different areas of the United States and the world, including the following: Santa Barbara; Antarctica; Tillamook, Winchester Bay, and Portland, Oregon; Rhode Island; Auke Bay in Juneau, Alaska; and finally ending his career in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was a master seaman both in the Coast Guard and off duty. Steve was a qualified coxswain, a Search and Rescue Surfman, plus held a number of other shipboard assignments. Steve served his country and community with honor. Since his retirement in 2002 and moving to Redding, Steve held a number of different occupations: Shasta County Sheriff's Boating Safety officer; warehouse manager for Metra Electronics; assistant manager at Bridge Bay moorage; and an oarsman for River Romance. Two years ago, Steve decided to concentrate on higher education and was planning to finish his AA at Shasta College this semester and then transfer to Cal State University at Chico to complete his BA in Accounting. Steve was devoted to his family and friends, always willing to lend a hand. His kind heart, generosity, sense of humor, and love of talking will stay in our hearts forever. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Whiskeytown Sailing Club, plus an active participant in all of his wife and children's interests. Steve was preceded in death by his mother Erin and his father Fred. He leaves behind his loving wife of 14 years Sherrie Bichlmeier-Malais, daughter Taylor, 12, and son Thomas, 8.
