End Comes To Calvin L. Ely Sutter Native
Calvin L. Ely, pioneer and son of pioneers, died Tuesday morning in Marysville after having been 
sick the past six years. He had been under care lately at the general hospital here. Funeral 
services have been set for 11 a.m. Thursday at the community church in Sutter City with the 
Rev. Ralph Crawford officiating. Interment will be in the Sutter City cemetery. Ely was a member 
of one of the most prominent pioneer families of the Sutter County. His father came around the 
Horn to San Francisco in 1849 and continued by water up the Sacramento to Vernon, then 
thought to be the head of navigation and headed for the mines of Yuba river. After mining awhile 
he came to the camp that later became Marysville and began hauling fresh vegetables to the
 mines, using an ox team. later he took up 160 acres on Butte Slough four from Meridian and 
settled down for the remainder of his life. Calvin Ely was born on that ranch January 14, 1865 and 
on reaching maturity farmed for some time in that vicinity. Later he bought lands around Sutter 
City and that became his home for most of his life being 65 years old at his death. He is survived 
by his wife, Sophie and by two daughters and a son, Mrs. Grace Donnelly of Marysville, Mrs Dwight 
Adams of Palo Alto and Ambrose Ely of Sutter City
