At the age of 18 he joined the Revolutionary Army and served on Long Island and at New York in the summer of 1776. During the next year he took part in the expedition against Burgoyne. A diary which he kept during this period is now in the possession of the Connecticut Historical Society. It contains an entry for each of his fifty-six days of service from September 2 to October 27, carefully written, and is an interesting and valuable contribution to Revolutionary Records. In it he describes his march in Capt. Blague's Company of Militia from Middletown, September 2, 1777, to Beeman Heights, where they joined General Arnold's Division in the Northern Army. He had various interesting experiences, which he daily set down, recording, also, the results of different engagements. He was in both the Battles of Stillwater and was in his place in the American ranks as they stood on the right and left while Burgoyne's surrendered army passed between them. Of this surrender he says: " It was a glorious sight to see the haughty Britons march out and surrender their arms to our army, which, but a little before, they despised and called ' Poltroons; ' they, however, before the surrender, were convinced of their error, having in two engagements seen the greatest bravery that was ever displayed." October 20 he writes: " I was one of fifty that were called out of the regiment to guard one hundred and twenty-eight prisoners of war to Hartford." He makes an entry on each day of this journey. At the dose of the journal he adds, probably later in life, some account of his experience the previous year in the army when he was in Capt. LEVIN JOYNES was born in Accomack Co., Va., January 6, 1753, and died there October 22, 1794. He served his country faithfully as a soldier and at the close of the Revolution as a civilian. In January, 1776, he received a commission as Captain of the 9th Va. Regiment, which became a part of the Continental Line or regular Army, established under the authority of Congress. This regiment was composed of five Companies from Accomack County, two from North Hampton, and three from the western shore of Virginia. In the autumn of 1776 this regiment marched northward and joined the Army under Gen. Washington, then in New Jersey. On the march, Col. Thomas Flemming died and Lieut.-Col. George Mathews succeeded him. Major Sayers was made Lieut.-Colonel; three senior Captains of the Regiment became candidates for the vacant post of Major. Capt. Joynes was elected to fill the vacancy in the 9th Regiment and according to a ruling of Gen. Washington the other two Captains received similar promotions to other Regiments. The 9th Regiment bore an active and honorable part in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown. At the latter, Major Joynes was taken prisoner and confined in the new jail in Philadelphia, and when the British Army evacuated that city, June, 1778, he was confined, together with the other officers of the 9th Regiment, on Long Island. In 1779 he and a brother officer received a parole to enable them to go to Philadelphia for the purpose of representing to Congress the wretched condition of the American prisoners and to urge a speedy exchange with the enemy. During his temporary liberty he hurried to his home and married Miss Anne Smith, on September 15, 1779. At the expiration of his parole he returned to captivity, and in December, 1780, three years and two months after his capture, he was exchanged. He continued in the service until the end of the war, and was finally discharged, in 1783, seven years and ten months after he had entered the service as a Captain. At the time of his discharge he was a "Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding," that is, he had command of a regiment. In 1788 he was elected a member of the Senate of Virginia. From the printed journal of that body it appears that he was a warm advocate of the Federal Constitution and an earnest supporter of Washington's Administration. (Heitman's Hist. Reg., pp. 53, 246, 247. Roster of Va. Authorities in the Archives of the State of Va. Bottas' Hist. of the War of Ind. Memoir of Thos. R. Joynes, in possession of Prof. Edward S.
