Robert Prescott, who was then commanding the British forces in that state, and who had his headquarters in the farmhouse of Samuel Overton, a Quaker, a few miles from Newport, R. I. On the night of July 10, 1777, accompanied by thirty-eight well-armed men and a negro named Price, he crossed Narragansett Bay in four whale boats, from Warwick Point to Overton's farm. He caused his forces to surround the house, and having eluded the sentry he entered, accompanied by the negro, who burst open the locked door of Gen. Prescott's apartments. Gen. Prescott promptly surrendered to Col. Barton; was placed in one of the whale boats, conveyed to Warwick Point, and was subsequently sent under guard to Gen. Washington's headquarters. For his conduct in this affair Congress presented Col. Barton with a sword, and also gave him a commission as Colonel in the Continental Army. This sword is now in the possession of the Rhode Island Historical Society. In the action of Bristol Ferry, in August, 1778, Col. Barton was severely wounded and was disabled from further active service. He subsequently held the rank of General in the Rhode Island State Militia, and was a member of the Rhode Island Convention, which adopted the National Constitution.
