BENJAMIN HARRISON was born at Berkeley, on the James River, Va., about 1746, and died in April, 1791. He was a member of the Continental Congress and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was also a member of the Convention which framed the Constitution of the United States. From 1782 to 1784 he was Governor of Virginia.

DANIEL LYMAN was born in Connecticut in 1756, and died in Rhode Island, December 7, 183o. He graduated from Yale College in 1776, and was a Colonel in the Continental Army and Chief Justice of Rhode Island. He assisted at the capture at Ticonderoga, Crown Point, and St. Johns, and was at the Battle of White Plains, where he had a horse shot under him. He was also a member of the Hartford Convention.

ASA REDINGTON was born in Boxford, Mass., in 1761, and died in Waterville, Me., in 1845. In June, 1778, he enlisted in a Regiment of troops raised in the state of New Hampshire and commanded by Col. Peabody. This Regiment marched to the state of Rhode Island, and was in service against the British Army at Newport, commanded by Gen. Sullivan. From this service he was discharged at Providence, in December, 1778. In June, 1779, he again enlisted in the Continental Army for one year, and served for that term in the states of New York and New Jersey in the 3d New Hampshire Regiment, commanded by Col. Alexander Scammell. He was discharged at West Point in July, 1780. He again enlisted in the Contintental Army in March, 1781, for three years, and served in the 3d New Hampshire Regiment, commanded by Col. Scammell. He was at the capture of the British at Yorktown, Va., on October 19, 1781, and on December 20, 1783, he was discharged from service at West Point, his services having covered a period of more than four years and three months. On July 1, 1783, he was appointed a Corporal in Capt. Howe's Company, Washington's Life Guards.

JACOB REED was born in Philadelphia Co., Pa., June 30, 1730, and died in New Britain Township, Bucks Co., Pa., November 2, 1820. On May 6, 1777, he was commissioned Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st Battalion of the Philadelphia County Militia. He saw active service under Gen. Washington, participating in the Battles of Trenton, Germantown, and Brandywine. After three years' service as Lieutenant-Colonel he was elected Major of the 5th Battalion, Pennsylvania Troops, in which he served until the close of the war.

SIMEON REED was born in Newark, Conn., March 15, 1754, and died in Pawlet, Vt., July 24, 1840. In September, 1776, he served four months as a Private in Capt. Child's Company and in 1777 he served four months in Capt. John Stark's Company of Col. Seth Warner's Regiment. In November, 1780, he served fourteen days in Capt. Barrett's Company and in 1781 fourteen days in Lieutenant Reynold's Company, in the New York Levies.

DANIEL REQUA was born in Westchester Co., N. Y., June 5, 1735, and died there in October, 1803. He served as a Private in Capt. Gabriel Requa's Company, Col. Hammond's Regiment of New York State Troops. He was captured and confined in the old Sugar House Prison at New York state, and after enduring great hardship was finally exchanged for a British officer captured by his son Abraham. He entered service May, 1776, as a Private in Capt. Wm. Dutcher's Company. He afterwards served under Capt. Sybert Acker. Then under Capt. Daniel Williams and Lieut. Abraham Van Wart and Lieut. Heddy. In 1778 he served in Lieut. Peacock's Company. He participated in several engagements in Westchester Co., N. Y., doing mostly scout duty.

Son of NOAH ROBINSON and Elizabeth (Browne née Osborne).

NOAH ROBINSON was born in Stratham, N. H., in 1756, and died in New Hampton, N. H., February 10, 1827. He enlisted May 1, 1775, in the 2d New Hampshire Regiment, commanded by Col. Enoch Poor. He was in the Battles of Trenton, N. J., December 26, 1776; at Princeton, N. J., January 3, 1777; at the first Battle at Saratoga, N. Y. (no doubt intended for the first engagement at Stillwater), September 15, 1777; in the Battle at Monmouth, N. J., June 26, 1778. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Stillwater. He was commissioned 2d Lieutenant, November 8, 1776, signed by John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress; subsequently appointed Lieutenant-Commission on parchment, signed by John Jay, President of Congress, dated June 6, 1779, to take effect from December 22, 1777. He was pensioned by Act of Congress, March 3, 1807, for wounds received and services rendered. He died in New Hampton, N. H., February 10, 1827.

GIDEON ROBINSON was a Private Soldier in Capt. Gen. Moddy's Company of Col. Badger's and Col. Stickney's Regiments of the New Hampshire Militia. This Regiment was raised in September, 1776, by Col. Nathan Baldwin, and participated in the Battle of White Plains in October, 1776, and was discharged in December of that year.

EDWARD TOPPING was born in South Hampton, L. I., and died at the same place. He served as an Ensign of the 2d South Hampton Company of Minute-men and afterwards as 1st Lieutenant in the 2d Regiment of Suffolk Troops, being commissioned on February 23, 1776. He was with the troops engaged in the Battle of Long Island, August 27, 1776, and killed one of a party of British soldiers that attacked his house while on a marauding expedition.

THOMAS LEE was born in Fishkill, N. Y., November 15, 1739, and died in Penn Yan, N. Y., January 22, 1814. He was a 2d Lieutenant in Capt. Jack Rosekrance's Company, Col. Holmes' 4th Regiment N. Y. Continental Line, in which he enlisted June 28, 1775: He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant August 3 of the same year, and on November 21, 1776, he was Captain of the 8th Company, Col. Louis Du Bois' Regiment, of the New York Continental Line, in which he served until his resignation, May 19, 1778. He was also appointed Captain, on October 19, 1779, in Col. Zepharriah Platt's Regiment of New York Associated Exempts, and on July 1, 1870, he was appointed a Captain in Col. Du Bois' Regiment of the New York Militia.

William Williams' Regiment on an expedition to Bennington from August 29 to September 23, 1777. He next served as Lieutenant in Capt. Joseph Blakesley's Company from the beginning of the campaign in 1781 to June 30, 1781. He also served as Lieutenant in Capt. Blakesley's Company of Col. Fletcher's Battalion from July 1, 1781, to December 2, 1781.

Son of JOHN RUTHERFORD and Mary (Wadleigh).

JOHN RUTHERFORD was born in Newburyport, Essex Co., Mass., in 1762, and died at the same place November 17, 1840. He first entered the service at Beverly, Mass., in 1776, as a Private in Capt. Putnam or Capt. Peter's Company, Col. Israel Hutchinson's Regiment, and was taken prisoner at Fort Washington on November 16, 1776, and carried to New York, where he was detained seven weeks before being exchanged. In September, 1777, he entered on board the private-armed schooner Glasgow, Capt. Parsons, and went on a cruise lasting about three months, during which time the British ship Oxford was captured and brought as a prize to Newburyport. He then shipped on board the private armed schooner Hornet, Capt. Springer, and during a cruise of about two months captured the British brig Success, having on board provisions and clothing for the British Army. In the year 1778, for about two months, he served on the private armed schooner Shark, Capt. Preston. In the year 1779 he served two months on the private armed brig Gates, Capt. Newman, and captured two prizes, one a British brig loaded with wine, and the other the British-armed schooner, Rambler. He next served for about three months on the private-armed ship Monmouth, Capt. Paul Newman, and cruised off the West Indies. He then served three months on the brig Adventurer, Capt. John O'Brien, and, together with the brig Hazzard, Capt. John Foster Williams, captured the British-armed brig Active, after a severe engagement, lasting thirty-two minutes. He next served on the ship Sky Rocket, Capt. William Burke, in an expedition to the Penobscot River. He also served on the Letter of Marque, Drake, Capt. Newman, the ship Mercury, Capt. Johnson, the brig Congress, Capt. Wells, and the ship General Stark, Capt. Fisher. During his service on one of these vessels he was captured in 1783 by a British ship and detained as a prisoner on Antigue Island for about eleven months.

LITTLETON JETER was born in 1754 and died May 20, 1842. He enlisted sometime in the month of September, 1776, as a Private in Capt. William Taliaperro's Company, 2d Virginia Regiment, commanded by Col. Woodford, and served in that Company and Regiment about one year, when he was honorably discharged at Williamsburg. He participated in the Battle of Long Bridge near Norfolk and in other skirmishes.

DAVID SAGE was a Sergeant in the 2d. Conn. Regiment, Col. Joseph Spencer commanding. He enlisted May 5, 1775, and on September 1 was detached to Arnold's expedition against Quebec. At the defeat of Quebec on the 31st of December, 1775, he was taken prisoner.

JOHN ROWE was born in Gloucester, October 6, 1729, and died in Pejepscot Claim, now known as South Auburn, Maine, July 1, 1795. He served as a Captain in the War of the Revolution.

JONATHAN ROWE enrolled as a Corporal in the Company of Volunteers raised in Gloucester and participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill. His father, John Rowe, was Captain of this Company.

EPHRAIM SAWYER was born in Lancaster, Mass., in 1719. At the outbreak of the war he raised a Company of Minute-men and was Major in Col. Asa Whitcomb's Regiment at the Battle of Bunker Hill, and Lieutenant-Colonel at the capture of Burgoyne at Saratoga.

JAMES SAWYER was born in Burlington, Vt., in 1761, and died at the same place March 27, 1827. When only fourteen years of age, he accompanied his father at the Battle of Bunker Hill and was also present at Burgoyne's Surrender. He was commissioned Ensign on July 22, 1781, in Col. Jackson's 8th Regiment, and was in Col. Hamilton's Light Infantry at the storming of the redoubt at Yorktown and the Surrender of Cornwallis. At the close of the war be returned to Burlington, was Colonel of Vermont Militia and for many years Sheriff of Chittenden County. He was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati.

SAMUEL SCOVILLE enlisted as an Ensign June, 1776, in Capt. Cornelius Higgins' 8th Company, Col. Douglass' Battalion, Wadsworth's Brigade, to reenforce Washington's Army at New York, and served until December 25, 1776. Afterwards served as Private in Capt. Converse's Company, 2d Regiment, Connecticut Line, and again from December 11, 1780, to 1783 as Private in Col. Herman Swift's Regiment in "Final Formation Connecticut Line." (Eight regiments reduced to five.)

SAMUEL SCOVILLE, JR., was born in Massachusetts on the 14th of October, 1757, and died in Pennfield, Monroe Co., N. Y., June 3, 1824. He first enlisted as Ensign in Capt. Jothan Curtis' Company of Minute-men and Volunteers at Northbury, Conn., July 4, 1776. He again enlisted, in December, 1777, as a Sergeant in Capt. James Wilcox's Company of Col. Jeduthan Baldwin's Regiment of Connecticut Artillery Artificers, and was at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and other battles, serving until the spring of 1781.

CHARLES CLOSE was born in Belfast, Ireland, August 10, 1756, and died in Webster, N. Y., September 10, 1858. He enlisted at Baltimore, Md., November, 1775, as Private in Capt. Nathaniel Smith's Company of Col. Samuel Smith's Regiment of Maryland Artillery, serving six years. Was engaged in the Battles of Monmouth, Cowpens, Guilford Court-house, and Yorktown.

DANIEL SHERMAN was born August 14, 1721. During the entire Revolutionary War he was a member of the Committee of Inspection for the town of Woodbury, Conn. It was his duty to promote the enlistment of soldiers, to care for their families, to ascertain who were Tories or who were enemies of the country, and to prosecute them and cause their estates to be confiscated. During four years of the war he was a member of the Council of Safety, of Woodbury, by appointment of the General Assembly. As such it was his duty to advise the Governor in all matters pertaining to the duties of the state in the prosecution of the war and in furnishing men and supplies. He represented the town of Woodbury in the General Assembly sixty-five annual sessions, between the years 1754 and 1791 inclusive. During a part of that time he was speaker of the Lower House, and when the Federal Constitution was referred to the several states for ratification, he was a member of the State Constitutional Convention, and voted in favor of its ratification.

Latimer's Militia Regiment, which rendered service in Poor's Brigade, Arnold's Division, at the Battle of Saratoga.

He was taken prisoner and was confined in the old sugar-house in New York City, but was afterwards exchanged. Later he became one of the charter Trustees of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va.

On June 22, 1775, he was appointed a Brigadier-General in the Continental Army, and on August 9, 1776, he was appointed a Major-General. He resigned January 13, 1778. During the Siege of Boston he commanded a brigade of four regiments, including his own. After the Siege of Boston he accompanied his troops to New York. He commanded a division at the Battle of Long Island and was present at White Plains. He next organized an expedition against the enemy at Newport, in October, 1777, and later was a member of the Continental Congress.

He was Regimental Paymaster from May 1, 1779, to June, 1783. He served at Germantown and in the Battle of Monmouth and at the storming of Stony Point.

HEZEKIAH SUMNER was born in Middletown, Conn., December 4, 1724, and died in Otis, Mass., 1802. He was a member of Capt. Allen's Company of Col. Nigglesworth's Regiment of Berkshire County, Mass., in which he enlisted for three years in 1777.

WILLIAM SUMNER was born in Stoughton, Mass., January 15, 1755, and died in Foxboro, Mass., November 26, 1832. He appears with the rank of Private on the Lexington Alarm Roll of Capt. James Endicott's Company, Col. Lemuel Robinson's Regiment, which marched on the Alarm of April 19, 1775, from Stoughton. He enlisted March 4, 1776, as a Corporal in Capt. Josiah Pratt's Company, Col. Gillis' Regiment, and served for 5 1/2 days. During this time he marched on the Alarm to Roxbury. He enlisted June 13, 1776, and served three days in Capt. Endicott's Company, Col. Gillis' Regiment, during which time he marched to Moon Island, and was there when the British fleet was driven out of Boston Harbor. His next service was from April 18, 1777, to March 12, 1777, when he enlisted as Private in Capt. Robert Swan's Company of Col. Gillis' Regiment for service in Rhode Island. On August 14, 1777, he joined Capt. Bradley's Company, Col. Gillis' Regiment, and served three months and twenty-eight days, during which time he marched to Manchester, Vt., to join the Northern Army.
