ARTEMUS TAFT was born in Mindon; Mass., and died in Rutland, Vt. He was a Private in Capt. Andrew Peters' Company, Col. Joseph Read's Regiment, Massachusetts Militia, enlisting April 29, 1775, and serving until August 1, 1775, three months and ten days. He next appears as a Private in Capt. Coggin's Company of Col. Wood's Regiment, Massachusetts Militia, mustered in in Worcester County for the purpose of serving in Rhode Island. June 22, 1778, he enlisted as a Sergeant in Capt. Samuel Hament's Company, Col. Nathaniel Wade's Regiment, Massachusetts Militia, for service in Rhode Island, and was discharged January 1, 1779.

JOSHUA HARNDEN was born in 1740 and died September 9, 1807. On March 26, 1776, he was 1st Lieutenant in the Massachusetts Militia, and on April 19, 1776, he was Sergeant at Lexington in Col. Green's Regiment, Massachusetts Militia. On May 6, 1776, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the 7th Middlesex Regiment, and on September 17, 1776, he was drafted from Wilmington, Mass., with the rank of Lieutenant. On September 26, 1776, he was ordered to march to Horse Neck Bay, Gen. Oliver Prescott. From October 9 to November 16, 1776, he was 2d Lieutenant in Capt. Samuel Belknap's Company, and from July 2, 1776, to December 12, 1778, he was Lieutenant-Colonel of Jacob Gerrish's Regiment.

RUFUS WILLARD was born in Sheffield, Mass., in 1751, and died at Chittemango, N. V., in 1832. He was a Private in Capt. John Spoor's Company, Col. Ashley's Regiment, in which he enlisted July 7, 1777, and was discharged July 28, 1777, a service of twenty-two days.

Noadiah Wade's Company, 4th Battalion, 2d Establishment, New Jersey Continental Line. He also served as a Private in Capt. Aaron Ogden's Company, 1st Regiment, New Jersey Continental Line.

PETER HARWOOD was born in Silliton, Mass., May 10, 1740, and died in Delaware, January 14, 1805. He served with the rank of Captain and Major in the 6th Massachusetts Regiment, commanded by Col. Thomas Nixon, from July, 1780, until October of the same year. (Cert. of the U. S. Pension Office, May 3, 1897.) He also fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill, and was officer of the day when Major Andre was hanged.

JOSEPH UPHAM, JR., was born in Redding, Mass., December 10, 1740, and died in Dudley, Mass. He was a member of the Committee of Safety from the town of Dudley in 1774. On August 17, 1779, he was elected as a Delegate to the Convention, which met at Cambridge, Mass., September 5 following, to assist in framing a Constitution. A committee was also appointed to prepare suitable instructions for his guidance.

JABEZ UPHAM was born in Massachusetts, May 6, 1735, and died in Maine. He enlisted as a Sergeant in Capt. Thomas Weeks' Company of Col. Elisha Porter's Regiment, Massachusetts Militia, which marched to the Lexington Alarm of April 19, 1775, from Greenwich, Mass. He served fourteen days. On June 1, 1775, he enlisted as a Private in Capt. Angel's Company of Col. David Brown's Regiment, in which he served one month and one week. He next enlisted in Capt. Wright's Company of Col. Brown's Regiment, in October, 1775, and served eight months.

JOSEPH BRADLEY VARNUM was born in Dracut, Mass., and died there. He appears with the rank of Private in Capt. Stephen Russel's Company, Col. Greene's Regiment, and marched on the Lexington Alarm of April 19, 1775, serving seven days. He next appears as a Captain in Col. Simeon Spaulding's 7th Middlesex County Regiment, in which he enlisted September 27, 1777, and after a service of forty-two days was discharged in November, 1777. He marched to reenforce the Northern Army. He next appears as a Captain in Col. McIntosh's Regiment, Gen. Lovell's Brigade, in which he enlisted July 29, 1775, for service in Rhode Island.

John Gray's Company of Col. Jonathan Mitchell's Regiment of the Massachusetts Militia, in which he enlisted July 7, 1779, and from which he was discharged September 12, 1779.

JOSEPH VOSE was born in Milton, Mass., December 7, 1739, and died there May 22, 1816. In November, 1774, he was chosen Colonel of the District Militia, and was also a Major in Gen. Heath's Division. On November 4, 1775, he was commissioned Lieutenant-Colonel of Greaten's 24th Regiment and accompanied it to Canada after the evacuation of Boston. He was commissioned Colonel of the 1st Massachusetts Regiment, February 21, 1777, and joined the main army under Washington in New Jersey a few weeks later. He participated in the Battle of Monmouth and in Sullivan's Campaign in Rhode Island in 1778. February 17, 1871, he was appointed Colonel of a regiment of Light Infantry, with which he took part in the Siege of Yorktown and the Surrender of Cornwallis. At the close of the war he was breveted Brigadier-General.

AMOS CUTTING WEST was born in 1757, and died in Penn Yan, N. Y., April 14, 1837. He enlisted July 17, 1775, in the 8th Connecticut Militia, Col. Jedediah Huntington, which was raised by order of the Connecticut Assembly at its July session in 1775. The regiment was stationed on Long Island Sound until September, 1775, when it was ordered to Boston Camp and took post at Roxbury, in Gen. Spencer's Brigade. On November 18, 1775, he was discharged from service. On May 20, 1777, he again enlisted as a Corporal in Capt. Bull's Company of Continental Troops, and was promoted to Sergeant May 16, 1778. He was engaged in the Battles of Valentines' Hill and Mill Square in Rhode Island, and was with his regiment at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777 and 1778, and was allowed a pension June 29, 1819.

WHITNEY HILL was born in Holliston, Mass., May 13, 1748, and died there January 26, 1800. He enlisted in April, 1775, and served ten days as a Corporal in Capt. Bullard's Company. In 1776 he served eight months as a Sergeant in Capt. Samuel King's Company of Col. Whitney's Regiment. In 178o he served fourteen days as a Private in Capt. Eames' Company. All these services were rendered in the Massachusetts Militia.

WILLIAM TALCOTT was born in Hebron, Conn., and died there. In 1775 he was a Sergeant in the company of Hebron Militia that marched to Lexington on the Alarm of April 19, 1775. In 1778 he served as Ensign in one of the Connecticut Regiments, and in 1780 was commissioned Lieutenant in Col. Wells' Regiment of Connecticut Troops. He was captured at the Battle of Horse Neck on December 9, 1780, and. after a confinement of several months on the prison hulk in New York Harbor, he was finally exchanged, greatly disabled by disease and incapable of performing further military duties.

GIBBONS JEWETT was a Surgeon in Col. Selden's Regiment Connecticut Troops in 1776.

John Rand, from July 17 to October 10, 1780.

NATHANIEL WARREN was born in 1717 and died August 17, 1799. He was a Private in Capt. Thomas Fisher's Company, Col. Nathan Tyler, and served in Rhode Island in 1779 and 1780, and also in the same company in 1782.

STEPHEN WARREN was born October 5, 1752, at Woodstock, Conn., and died at Wardsborough, Vt., in 1819. He served as a Minute-man in the Lexington Alarm, April 19, 1775, in Capt. Timothy Parker's Company, Col. Warner's Regiment. (Lexington Alarm Rolls, Vol. 13, p. 53.) He was a Private in Capt. Adam Martin's Company of Col. Ebenezer Learned's Regiment, in which he enlisted April 27, 1775, and served eight months at the Siege of Boston. (Muster Rolls, Vol. 15, p. 72; Vol. 56, p. 19.) He was also at the Battle of Long Island in 1776. (Vermont Hist. Mag., p. 824.) He was a Private in Captain Abel Mason's Company, Col. Jacob Davis' Regiment, and marched to Tiverton, R. Fuller's Company, Col. Thatcher's Regiment, for five days' service. From March 14, 1777, to June 7, 1778, he served as a Private in the Continental Army, Capt. Warner's Company, Col. Marshall's Regiment, and was reported dead. June 7, 1778.

Nehemiah Allen's Company, Cot Cotton's Regiment, in September and October, 1777, on a secret expedition to Rhode Island. He next served as a Corporal in Capt. Benjamin Rider's Company, of Col. Jacob's Regiment, from July 26, 1780, to November 1 of the same year.

JONATHAN WHIPPLE was born in Massachusetts. He appears with the rank of a Private on the Lexington Alarm Roll of Capt. John Albee's Company, which marched on the Alarm of April 19, 1775, from Mendon to Roxbury. He served nine days. He next enlisted as a Private in Capt Samuel Cragiun's Company, Lieut.-Col. Nathan Tyler's Regiment, for service at Rhode Island. He was discharged January 21, 1777. From September 5, 1777, to November 29, 1777, he was a Private in Capt. David Bent's Company, Col. Job Cushing's Regiment, Massachusetts Militia, and he next enlisted as a Corporal, on October 14, 1779, in Capt. Thomas Cummings' Company, of Col. Jacob Garrish's Regiment, Massachusetts Militia, which was detached from Essex and Suffolk Counties to reinforce the army commanded by Gen. Washington. He was discharged November 22, 1779. He then enlisted on July 28, 1780, Col. Job Knapp's Company, of Col. Nathan Tyler's Regiment, for service at Rhode Island, and marched to Tiverton, R. I., on the Alarm of July 27, 1780, serving fourteen days.

NATHANIEL WINSLOW was born April 22, 1730, in Rochester, Mass., and died January 6, 1778, at Salisbury, Conn. He fell a victim to the prevailing epidemic while exerting his powerful influence in aid of the American Army during the Revolutionary War.

JAMES WILLIAMS was born in Taunton, Mass: He was Captain of a Company of Minute-men which marched April 20, 1775, in response to the Alarm of April 19, 1775, from Taunton to Roxbury. After a service of twelve days he was discharged, on April 29, 1775. He was commissioned February 7, 1776, as 2d Major of the 3d Bristol County Regiment, Massachusetts Militia, as one of the field officers. Later he appears with the rank of Major on the Muster and Pay Rolls of the Field Staff officers of the 3d Bristol County Regiment, Col. George Williams, from which he was discharged December 31, 1776, after a service of twenty-five days. On July 24, 1779, he was engaged as a Major in Col. Thomas Carpenter's Regiment for service in the Rhode Island expedition, and was discharged after serving one month and eighteen days. Later he was chosen Lieutenant-Colonel of the 3d Regiment of Militia in Bristol County. In this capacity he served for eight days, being discharged August .7, 1780. Subsequent to the Revolution he was commissioned Colonel of the 3d Regiment, and afterwards Brigadier-General, commanding the Bristol County Brigade.

Jedediah Huntington'.s 17th Continental Regiment, and also with the rank of Captain in the Connecticut Militia, for service at New London, in July, 1778. He was taken prisoner at Long Island, August. 27, 1776, and detained there until his discharge in September, 1777.

JABEZ PERCIVAL was a Private in Capt. Abel King's Company, of Col. Sear's Regiment, in which he enlisted August 25, 1781; and after a service of three months was discharged on November 20 of the same year. He was taken prisoner by the British.

He was at Stillwater, Saratoga, Valley Forge, Monmouth, and Spring Field, and was also with Gen. Sullivan in Rhode Island.

Whiting's Company of the Regular Infantry from May 1, 1777, to May 1, 1780. In 1776, from January to March, he was a fifer in Capt. Wells' Company of Col. Wolcott's Regiment, which occupied Boston after its evacuation by the British.

James Cunningham.  He was at this time less than twenty years of age and participated

in the Battle of Long Island under Gen. Washington, August 27, 1776, and was discharged in September following because of wounds received. He again enlisted and fought at Brandywine, September 11, 1777, under Col. Alexander Lowry, in the 3d Battalion, Pennsylvania Troops.

In this he was successful.

JOSHUA GLOVER was born in Milton, Mass., February 3, 1736, and died September 17, 1788. He was, for seven days, a drummer in Capt.  Ebenezer Tucker's Company, which marched on the Alarm of April 19, 1775, from Milton. On April 27, 1775, he enlisted as a Private in Capt. William Bent's Company, Col. John Greaton's Regiment, in which he served three months and twelve days. During the same time he also served as a Private in Col. Heath's Regiment. On March 4, 1776, he enlisted for five days' service as a Private in Capt. John Bradley's Company, Col. Benj. Gill's Regiment, and marched to Dorchester Neck when the forts were erected on the Heights. On April 13, 1776, he enlisted for twelve days as a Private in Capt. Josiah Vose's Company, in the Sea Coast Defense service, and on March 1778, he enlisted for one month and four days in Capt. William Badcock's Company, Col. Capt. Seth Bullard's Company, Col. Joseph Read's Regiment.  In 1777 he enlisted for three years in Capt. Thomas Seaward's Company; of the 3d Artillery, as a Sergeant, and was discharged March 1780.

of the State of Connecticut in 1776 and acted as such during the years 1776, 1777, 1778, and 1779. In 1776 he was also the New Haven Representative of the Freemen of the several towns of Connecticut.

JOSHUA BABCOCK was born in Westerly, Rhode Island, May 17, 1707, and died there April 1, 1783. He was graduated from Yale College in the class of 1724, and was the earliest graduate who held a commission for services during the Revolution. In May, 1776, he was elected Major-General of the Colony Brigade, which consisted of ten regiments for the Colony of Rhode Island.  He was also a member of the State Counsel of War and appointed one of the committee of those who proceeded to New York to consult with General Washington respecting the defense of Rhode Island.

HENRY BABCOCK served with General Putnam in the Boston Campaign for a time, and in March, 1776, was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Rhode Island Colonies Brigade.

BENJAMIN LYNDE was born in Leicester, Massachusetts, in 1747, and died in Springfield, Vt., in 1827. Early in November, 1775, he enlisted for fourteen months as a Sergeant with Capt. Peter Harwoodin, Col. Ebenezer Learned's Massachusetts Regiment, and marched to Roxbury for the Siege of Boston. Was discharged at King's Ferry, on the Hudson River, a short distance above New York City. He was commissioned January 1, 1777, and in April, 1777, joined Capt. Toogood's Company, in the 6th Massachusetts Regiment, commanded by Col. Thomas Nixon. In May, 1778, he was promoted to Lieutenant, and resigned October 14, 1780, because of lameness. He was in the Battles of Harlem Heights, and in August, 1777, he was transferred to the regiment commanded by Col. Morgan, and served in both Battles of Stillwater, Saratoga Co., New York, which preceded the surrender of the British Army under General Burgoyne at Saratoga. (Rec. U. S. PHINEAS WARD, SR., was a member of Captain Dyre's Company, Walbridge's Regiment, Vermont Militia, which was in service from October 12 to November 6, 1708. He was also a member of Capt. Downer's Company of the same Regiment, which was in service from October 12 to October 25, 1871.
